The Comatose Patient
Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is fast becoming the preferred diagnostic tool for evaluation of cardiac, pulmonary and vascular physiology, and pathology. It has been increasingly utilized for both cardiac as well as noncardiac surgeries. With increasing number of centers doing valve repairs as opposed to replacements, the use of TEE will continue to grow. As three dimensional TEE image...
متن کاملAttaching leaves and picking cherries to characterise the hybridisation number for a set of phylogenies
Throughout the last decade, we have seen much progress towards characterising and computing the minimum hybridisation number for a set P of rooted phylogenetic trees. Roughly speaking, this minimum quantifies the number of hybridisation events needed to explain a set of phylogenetic trees by simultaneously embedding them into a phylogenetic network. From a mathematical viewpoint, the notion of ...
متن کاملApproach to the comatose patient.
BACKGROUND Coma is a medical emergency and may constitute a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for the intensivist. OBJECTIVE To review currently available data on the etiology, diagnosis, and outcome of coma. To propose an evidence-based approach for the clinical management of the comatose patient. متن کاملPapilloedema delaying diagnosis of Wernicke's encephalopathy in a comatose patient.
A case of acute Wernicke's encephalopathy due to hyperemesis gravidarum is described. Florid bilateral papilloedema was present, resulting in diagnostic uncertainty and delay in treatment. Attention is drawn to the rare occurrence of papilloedema in Wernicke's encephalopathy, and possible underlying mechanisms for this physical finding are considered.
متن کاملBispectral Index Monitoring in a Severe Comatose Patient During Surgery
A comatose patient required a tracheostomy. His Glasgow Coma Score was 4 and he was intubated with mydriatic and isochoric pupils, without corneal and light reflexes. Two previous EEGs showed signs of severe and diffuse encephalopathy (arreactive delta and theta rhythms) and there were no somatosensory evoked potentials recordable at the scalp. When the tracheostomy procedure was carried out, t...
